Based on the results of a study in 2002, the Census Bureau reported that more than one in every 10 residents of the United States was foreign-born.
The number was more than double the percentage of foreign born in 1970[4.8 percent].
Much of the foreign-born population---almost one third--resides in California.
New York ranks second and Florida third.
The government study also includes where immigrants are from.
One of every two foreign-born residents comes from Central and South America and the Caribbean.
