Why should we read books.
The answer is obvious:
to serve our country and our people ,and to communicate freely with the world.
Nearly about 10years ago I had ever heard a famous novel ”little women” by American author LOUISA MAY ALCOTT. I have never yet read this story until two weeks ago. The enthusiasm that made me return to the book was a request of my little daughter ANNIE who was very content to enjoy the standard pronunciation of native speaker. So the emotional afterthoughts were developing then…..
Actually, ALCOTT wrote “little women” loosely based on the lives of herself and her three sisters. The novel was published in two volumes and following the lives of four sisters-MEG, JO, BETH AND AMY MARCH detailing their passage from childhood to womanhood. ALCOTT also wrote two sequels to her popular book, both of which also featured the MARCH sisters: “little men” and “Jo’s Boys”.
Little Women was a novel for girls with “the inescapable woman problem” and quiet different form the current writings for kids, especially girls, with merely “childhood innocence”. The three major themes, domesticity, work and true love, were interdependent and essential for the achievement of each heroine’s individual identity or personality.
Firstly, domesticity, one of the ideas of “little women”, had been well embodied in the first plot of the novel. The elder sister, MEG MARCH, was a beautiful and managed the household when her mother was absent. She fulfilled the expectations for women at that time. She had no employment or outside activities. She always lectured her younger sisters to ensure their growing up. Even after marriage, she was isolated in her life with her children for a long time. Although some critics had portrayed MEG lacking independent, secure identity or womanhood equality (feminist), I always thought the author was supposed to describe her in loving but not belittle MEG suffused in sentimental light.
Secondly, work, another gist of “little women”, was always haunting the story. As the American Civil War was underway, four sisters with their mother was settled in a new neighborhood, lived in poverty after their father lost much money, and faced Christmas without presents and father. The elder sisters, MEG (beautiful sister) AND JO (tomboy), both worked outside for money to support the family. BETH (musician) helped the servant with domestic housework. Besides that, JO loved literature, both reading and writing. JO also earned money through writing.
Finally, the most important subject of “little women”, was true love which infusing everywhere in the novel. Mrs March, a gracious mom, was always kind to everybody and everything. She was a great mother who taught tomboyish JO how to control her temper and not acting out her angry quickly. She was a kind woman who suggested her four daughters to supply their breakfast as Christmas present to the pity mother with a cried and hungry infant outdoor. She was always filling of love in her heart when challenges or troubles were coming up during the hard life.
At the beginning of writing these afterthoughts, I have only finished a half of the novel reading, but the moved stories and characters have impressed me and my daughter deeply. Just like what the Mrs MARCH said,” every mom has their plan for their kids, but they want their kids to be loved, they want people to think well of their kids, they want their kids to marry well not just because of rich”.
Now it is late at night. The novel, to me, is a loveliest world. I have drawn several simple pictures for my daughter about the four little sisters. That may be impressed in ANNIE’S memory. Now I am looking the reddish cheek of my lovely daughter who has fallen asleep. I really have my plan to wish my daughter will have happy and peaceful life in the future.
I will be back when I finished the whole reading! Also is ANNIE!
WISH EVERYBODY WELL ON THANKSGIVING DAY!
