Astrology is an ancient practice, and appears to have its origins in Chaldea, thousands of years B.C. By 700 B.C., the Zodiac was established. A few centuries later, the Signs of the Zodiac were very similar to the current ones.
According to astrology, mankind are not only influenced by hereditary(遗传的)factors and the environment, but also by the state of our solar system at the moment of birth. The planets are regarded as basic life-forces, the tools we live by, as well as the basis of our very substance. These planetary forces take on different forms, depending on their zodiacal positions and on the way they relate to one another.
One popular classification of the Signs of the Zodiac is elements(象)， which are also known as triplicities（“三位一体”) and speak to the basic nature and temperament of a sign. There are four elements and their corresponding signs are Fire（Aries, Leo and Sagittarius）, Earth（Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn), Air （Gemini , Libra and Aquarius） and Water (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces).
